Rabies exposure

Missoula Public Health is here to help with potential Rabies exposures. Rabies is a serious health concern that has no treatment or cure and is always fatal. Our team of experts can work with you to help you make decisions that are right for your health. Click the button below to submit your report. Please contact us to report a dog, domestic animal, or bat bite or if you have already been referred to the Health Department for the post-exposure rabies vaccine.

Depending on your case, you may need a rabies post-exposure vaccine. After a potential Rabies exposure, time is on your side as it is a very slow-moving virus. It may take our team one to two business days to respond.

When should I call animal control?

Call us if...

  • A dog is running at large (unrestrained and off the owner's property) and the owner isn't nearby. You will be asked to try to contain the dog.
  • A dog, cat or ferret bites a person or other pet and the bite breaks the skin.
  • You find a stray pet that doesn't have identifying tags and you're not able to identify or locate the owner. You will be asked to try to contain the pet.
  • You are concerned about an animal's welfare (not being fed, being abused, lack of cleanliness)
  • You want to report a nuisance barking dog.

Do not call us if...

  • You don't witness the incident yourself but heard about it or saw it on social media.
  • An incident took place several days or weeks ago and is no longer an emergency (except if you got bitten, then call us!)
  • A pet is chasing wildlife. Call Fish, Wildlife and Parks to report this.
  • A pet is putting people in immediate danger. Call 9-1-1.
