Radon levels in Missoula County can be up to five times the national average. Since radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S., it's important to get your home tested. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that may seep into your home from the soil or groundwater. The geological makeup of the soil and rock have led to increased radon levels in some areas of Missoula County. It is colorless, odorless and difficult to detect without a specialized kit. Homes in Missoula County have been found to have elevated radon levels, and health officials recommend testing homes for radon to determine if mitigation is needed. Fall and winter are optimal times to test your home while windows are closed for extended periods. The Montana Department of Environmental Quality offers discounted tests that you can order online. Missoula Public Health also offers home radon testing kits for $10.
