What are household chemicals?
Common, everyday products that you use can be dangerous to you and the environment if you just throw them in the trash. Common household hazardous waste items include:
- oil-based paint
- aersol cans
- strong cleaners containing lye
- drain openers
- weed killers
- gasoline, brake fluid and other automotive chemicals
- wood stains
- mineral spirits
- thermometers or flueroscent containing mercury
Why can't I pour them down the drain?
Besides the potential to damage to the plumbing in your house, these liquids contaminate our aquifer, rivers and the larger ecosystem of the Missoula valley. Keep our favorite recreation sites and our drinking water free from pollutants by disposing of chemical waste properly.
How can I dispose of my Household Chemical Waste?
In 2019, Missoula Public Health began collaborating with Home ReSource to explore establishing a permanent Household Chemical Disposal Facility as a replacement for the annual Haz Waste Days event. A formal proposal was developed in 2022, and in 2024 the facility officially opened.
Today, Missoula residents have access to a safe, convenient, and year-round option for disposing of household hazardous waste. By providing ongoing disposal opportunities, the program helps prevent harmful chemicals from entering our aquifer, waterways, and landfill, protecting both public health and the environment.
Appointments are available on Mondays, 11 AM to 4 PM. Book up to 30 days in advance. Same-day appointments may not be available.
