What pools need licenses?
There are many types of public swimming pools that require licensing. The most common are swimming pools and hot tubs. However, any kind of pool for swimming, bathing, wading, or other aquatic therapy or recreation, including natural hot water pools, therapeutic pools, hydrotherapy pools, Jacuzzis, splash decks, water slides, lazy rivers, and wave pools are required to license. These include pools and hot tub in apartment complexes, hotels, gyms, and other public businesses.
Private residential swimming areas are not required to license.
I have a plan to build or remodel a public pool, hot tub, or other water feature.
Plans for new construction and remodels must be reviewed by DPHHS Pool Licensing for approval. If you have questions about the plan review process, please contact DPHHS.
If your project is within city limits, please contact the City of Missoula Building Division for building information.
If your project is outside the city in Missoula County, contact Missoula County Building Projects & Permitting for building information.
I have a newly built public pool, hot tub, or other water feature that needs a pre-operational inspection.
Missoula Public Health conducts pre-operational and annual inspections for pools, hot tub, and other licensed water features. To request a pre-operational inspection, please contact us. Your project must have been approved by DPHHS prior to the pre-operational inspection. Please see the Annual Licensing Fee schedule for the amount due for your license fee at the time of the pre-operational inspection.
