July 17, 2026: Wildfire Smoke Air Quality Update

The current air quality across Missoula County is Good to Moderate. We’ve had a solid lucky streak without much smoke, but there’s a good chance for smoky skies to increase on Saturday and Sunday.
Numerous significant wildfires are burning in Oregon and Washington that are exhibiting very active fire behavior and producing a lot of smoke. Many of them started in the last day or two, like the Hoag Fire, Brewer Fire, Porcupine Ridge Fire, Cove Creek Fire, Crosswhite Fire, Lyons Ferry Fire, Egypt Fire, and others.
Currently, most of the smoke is staying over Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, but it’s likely to head towards Missoula County this weekend due to weather patterns shifting wind to a more southwesterly flow. Additionally, with more thunderstorms and lightning in the forecast for today, there is the possibility of new fire starts.

There is still a lot of uncertainty about how much smoke will reach us this weekend. We’re likely to see some, but we don’t know how bad it will be yet. Either way, now is the time to make sure you’re ready for it. Being ready for wildfire smoke can look a bit different for everyone, but here are some key points:
- How do you know if air quality levels are unhealthy for you to be in? Check out the EPA Fire and Smoke Map and learn about the Air Quality Index. The Air Quality Index is a color coordinated scale that helps us understand the amount of smoke in the air and what different air pollution levels mean for your health.
- Do you have a way to clean your indoor air so you can take a break from the smoke? Use a HEPA Air Cleaner or a DIY Box Fan Filter.
- What do you do when you need to be outside when it’s smoky? Have a pack of N95 masks handy. Adjust your plans and opt for a less-strenuous outdoor activity.

Remember that the goal is to reduce your exposure to smoke. It’s nearly impossible to completely eliminate your exposure, but reducing your exposure will help you stay healthy.
