Missoula Public Health's disease intervention specialist play an important role in preventing and monitoring contagious illness in our community.
Per state law, more than 80 contagious illnesses must be reported to the local Health Department by medical professionals, labs, and other designated sources.
These illnesses include things like tick and mosquito-borne diseases, food-related illnesses, whooping cough, and high lead levels. When Missoula Public Health learns of such an illness, their Disease Intervention Specialist Nurses take action to limit its spread in the community. They collaborate closely with healthcare providers, schools, and others to safeguard the community from various medical and infectious threats.
If you or a patience are diagnosed with one of these illnesses, you might receive a call from their specialists who will ask questions to identify the infection’s source and provide information to help prevent its spread.

Infectious Disease Outbreak Reporting
Several types of facilities are required to report when an outbreak occurs at their facility. This includes healthcare settings such as long term care facilities, hospitals, outpatient clinics, and surgery centers. It also includes community settings such as assisted living facilities, group homes, shelters, detention centers, schools, daycares, religious organizations, and community events.
There are two options for reporting. You only need to complete one.
